The airport that makes the Yampa Valley work.
Yampa Valley Regional (HDN) is the reason you can live in a remote mountain valley and still fly nonstop from a major city. It's in Hayden — my hometown — about 25 minutes from Steamboat, and it's in the middle of the biggest expansion in Routt County history. Here's the complete picture.
The basics
HDN is the main commercial airport for Steamboat Springs and the wider Yampa Valley — not a tiny strip, but a real regional airport with jet service from across the country.
Where it is
11005 CR 51A, Hayden, CO 81639 — on U.S. Highway 40, about 22–25 miles west of downtown Steamboat Springs.
Hayden, COCode
HDN. Operated by Routt County; branded as "Fly Steamboat" through the Steamboat Air Program.
HDNWhy it matters
Central to the valley — Steamboat to the east, Craig to the west. The combination of a real airport and a real town is a top reason buyers choose this area.

Flights & airlines
In the most recent season (winter 2025-26), the Steamboat Air Program connected HDN with roughly 17 major airports via six major carriers — one of the strongest schedules in the airport's history (Steamboat Pilot & Today).
| Carrier | Highlights (winter 2025-26) |
|---|---|
| United | United flies nonstop from several of its major hubs, with added frequency from Newark (EWR), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO). |
| JetBlue | Expanded service from Boston (BOS) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL), running into January. |
| Southwest | Added nonstop Saturday service from Austin (AUS) in March. |
| American · Delta · Alaska | Among the six carriers serving HDN for the season; routes vary — confirm current schedules. |
The expansion — the biggest project in county history
HDN is mid-transformation. Its multi-phase Terminal Area Plan is estimated at about $174 million through 2040, and Phase 1 — the $82 million West Terminal Expansion, which broke ground in June 2026 — is described as the largest project in Routt County history (Weitz, the CMAR contractor).
What's coming
A ground-up West Terminal addition: four new gate areas, boarding bridges (jetways — no more walking the tarmac), new TSA baggage screening, dining and concessions, and geothermal heating.
Phase 1When
Construction broke ground June 2026 and runs through about spring 2028; Phase 1 (~$86M all-in) operational around 2028, with later phases through 2040 (airport TAP financial plan).
2026 →Capacity
Designed for continued growth from a record ~227,000 enplanements in 2024 toward 600,000+ annual passengers by 2040 (Yampa Valley Bugle).
GrowthHow the airport is fueling Hayden's growth
The airport isn't just a way out of town — it's an economic engine for Hayden, and a big part of why my hometown is one of the fastest-growing, most attainable corners of Routt County.
Major employer + business park
HDN is a significant local employer, and an expanding business park sits adjacent to the airport (Yampa Valley Community Foundation).
JobsAmazon is coming
Amazon plans a ~40,000 sq ft distribution warehouse in Hayden to serve Craig, Steamboat, and into Wyoming (Steamboat Pilot & Today).
New investmentNew housing
Demand from pricey Steamboat is spilling west — Prairie Run affordable apartments and additional residential development are moving forward in Hayden.
