I learned to ski at Steamboat. My first turns were here, back when the gondola ran slow and you could grab a slice at Infernos at the base. Labor Day vintage auto races, birthday turns around Groundhog Day: I've been coming to this valley my whole life, and I finally moved here for good in 2023. I didn't move here to sell it. I LOVE here.
Joel E. Bernardini is a licensed Colorado real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties, based in Hayden and covering Routt County and the Yampa Valley — Steamboat Springs, Hayden, the South Routt towns, and Craig. He represents buyers. His first closing was a repeat buyer's home in Craig, carried through financing, inspection, and timing complications to a clean close — with a client testimonial to match. Routt County is his home ground; he serves Grand and Summit counties competently, and beyond that co-represents with a trusted local rather than pretend to be the neighborhood expert.
Real estate's been in the background the whole time
I grew up on the Front Range, in a Broomfield that was building fast — a good part of my childhood was spent around half-built houses, finishing more than one basement. And real estate was the family business: my father ran Bernardini Homes, a brokerage in Westminster, for about 20 years, and I grew up around it.
What I actually bring to it
Before real estate I spent more than a decade in capital-equipment sales: high-value deals, long relationships, and walking people through complicated decisions without rushing them. Turns out that's most of this job, too. What I bring isn't a pitch: a clear read on the market, clear presentation, and someone who protects the relationship through close.

Rooted through the work — and pitching in from here
My roots in this valley run through work and the people in it. I'm in Steamboat's service community most weeks — banquets and weddings at the Grand, the rodeo, the mountain — and that's not separate from real estate: my first client came straight out of it. Knowing the people who actually run this place is how I came to know it.
I'll be straight about the rest: I'm newer here, and I'm not yet personally active in a local charity. The one I plan to give my time to is STARS — Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports, the independent nonprofit out at Basecamp that gets people of every ability onto the mountain and the water. I haven't started yet, and I'd rather tell you that plainly than claim otherwise.
I'm also an agent with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties, and the brokerage does put real work into these communities. Through its Distinctive Angels program, offices across Colorado, Idaho, and Montana pool volunteer hours and run local coat and food drives — often with the Salvation Army — to help the seasonal workforce ahead of winter. As part of the national Coldwell Banker network, it also takes part in long-running efforts like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Homes for Dogs adoption project. I'm glad to carry that name while I add my own hours to it.
