You don't have to drive far. Some of the best-loved trails start within minutes of downtown — perfect for an after-work walk, an easy outing, or a quick leg-stretch with the dog.

Spring Creek Trail is a Steamboat staple for dog lovers. The wide lower trail runs alongside a county road from the parking lot up toward the upper trailheads, then climbs into the Routt National Forest — and the surrounding landscapes are stunning, especially in the fall up on the Flash of Gold trail. It's a long way to the top — call it a 10-mile round trip — so maybe bring a bike.
The lower sections meander on and off the main trail and spend a good stretch right on the river, leading to an off-leash dog park and several amazing views to take in. You can take that short loop and hang an uphill right to re-engage the main trail and continue upward to the next checkpoint. We continued on for about half a mile, but it was late in the afternoon and it was our first hike of the year. What a great one to choose.
Mad Creek, reviewed
Mad Creek was a choice for my first hike in several years. There are inclines, exposed cliffside drops to the river, and rattlesnakes that are just bullsnakes — according to my dad, with his hearing aids down. The vegetation closes in at the upper part of the trail as you approach the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, and I went 4+ miles in just to turn around and remember I have a bad knee on the way up, and a different bad knee on the way down.
It was a great day, with great scenery and great company. For a first time back out, this was moderately difficult — but totally worth it.

A step up in effort, these are the routes that show off the high country — wildflowers, ridgelines, and big Yampa Valley views.
Mad Creek
A scenic, well-loved valley trail north of town with meadows and the creek alongside. Heads up: the lower trail closes Dec 1–Apr 15 each year for elk winter range.

Trail systems and the iconic rock formation southeast of town, with high-meadow scenery.
ModerateHahn's Peak
About 4 miles round trip but steep, roughly 45 minutes' drive northwest near Steamboat Lake — a summit with panoramic views.
SteepBigger days & wilderness
For a full adventure, the Flat Tops Wilderness south and west of town delivers some of the most dramatic terrain in Colorado.
Devil's Causeway
A thrilling, narrow ridgeline in the Flat Tops — roughly an hour-plus drive (the last stretch on dirt forest road), strenuous, and a 6-mile out-and-back or 10-mile loop. No bikes (wilderness).
