Sea level to 6,900 feet. Steamboat is high, dry, and genuinely four-season — the mirror image of a humid Gulf-Coast summer. That contrast is exactly why Steamboat has long been a natural summer-escape base for Houston households, not just a ski trip. The a caveat is altitude: give yourself a day to adjust, drink more water than feels necessary, and treat it as a real factor if anyone in the household has a heart or lung condition.
The tax profile flips. Texas is famous for no state income tax and high property taxes. Colorado is close to the reverse: it does levy a state income tax, but its residential property taxes are among the lowest in the country. For a second home you're not homesteading, that low property-tax rate is often a pleasant surprise coming from Texas mill rates.
