North Routt is where Routt County goes rural — cabins, ranches, and land up the Elk River Valley, wrapped around two state-park lakes and the national forest. It's spectacular. It's also a well, a septic, a snow load, and a 25-mile drive to a grocery store. I'll tell you the whole picture, not just the view.
The real version
Head north out of Steamboat up Routt County Road 129 — the Elk River Road — and the valley opens into ranchland and aspen. Clark is the small hub, anchored by the historic Clark Store. Hahn's Peak is a former gold-mining settlement, one of the oldest in the northern county. Columbine and the Steamboat Lake area sit farther up. It's higher than Steamboat — Steamboat Lake is around 8,000 feet — which means more snow and a longer winter.
This is acreage and cabin country, not walkable-town or ski-in convenience. The trade for the privacy and the land is real: most parcels are on wells and septic, winter access varies by road, and the nearest services are back in Steamboat. And because it's forested mountain terrain, wildfire risk and insurance are worth checking for any specific property — I won't tell you they're fine; I'll tell you to verify them, and help you do it.

The Elk River Valley running north from Steamboat up Routt County Road 129 — Clark, Hahn's Peak, Columbine, and the Steamboat Lake area. Higher, snowier, and more remote than Steamboat: acreage, cabin, and ranch country near the lakes and national forest.
How far is it from Steamboat?
Clark is about 25 miles north — roughly a 30–45 minute drive depending on where you're headed and the conditions. Hahn's Peak and Steamboat Lake are farther. Plan on Steamboat for most groceries, medical, and shopping.
